What's New...

Julie of the Wolves - a new family musical based on the book by Jean Craighead George. This new family musical, already a decade in the works, has witnessed many readings, workshops, and last year, a remarkable dance workshop at the Kaufman Theatre - Museum Of Natural History in New York, where, Fay Simpson choreographed the turning of wolves to men and back again. The journey of Julie Of The Wolves (the musical) continues as the writer Barbara Dana prepares yet another rewrite.

Meanwhile, Chris Kubie records the show's songs with new and familiar talent at Acme Recording Studios in Mamaroneck, NY, with Rory Young engineering. This new package is to promote the musical. Updates of the show's progress, and performances will be listed here first, as well of streaming samples from these new sessions.

From "One Day in the Tropical Rain Forest":

Early in the morning, young Tepui walks through the Venezuelan tropical rain forest. Colorful birds call from the treetops, and a tribe of monkeys plays in the branches. But Tepui doesn't have time to enjoy the animals he loves so much. He is going to the Science Laboratory to talk to his scientist friends.

Today, trucks and bulldozers are heading to the forest. They are bringing men to cut down the trees. Many plants will die, and the animals will no longer have homes. Tepui and his friends want to think of a way to save the forest. But are they too late?

Julie of the Wolves

The movie of Julie of the Wolves is in production. Doug Seus, the partner and Wolves in Heber Valley, Utahtrainer of Bart , the grizzly bear, is raising little wolf pups to be Amaroq, Silver and Nails. Jean Craighead George went to Heber Valley, Utah, this summer where the pups are romping with the Seus family and gave Amaroq a bottle. She fed Silver her beef soup, and held Nails in her arms while he slept. They are friendly, loving little pups and becoming more so under Doug and his wife, Lynne's warm and loving training. These wolves will grow up to be the stars. When the movie is being shot, Kapu, the alpha pup, will be born and Doug will teach him his so-called "lines." At the same time, I'm composing the music with drum beats, wolf calls and songs that I hear in the Arctic wind and snow. What a great show this is going to be!

Also in development is a musical version of Julie of the Wolves which will hit the stage sometime after the release of the movie. Once again Chris Kubie and Jean Craighead George have joined forces as composer and lyricist. Some of the instrumental music from the motion picture will be heard this time with lyrics.

One Day In The Tropical Rainforest

One Day In The Tropical Rainforest book coverIn Oregon, nine hundred teachers and their 30,000 children have enjoyed the work of the Art Institute, founded by Annie Painter, a former principal and art consultant. They bring books to life. Ms. Painter read One Day in the Tropical Rain Forest to children to inspire them to create butterflies and tropical foliage from hand painted papers.

Their work is breath-taking.

Meanwhile, knowing that the tropical rain forest was also full of exciting music, Jean Craighead George and I obtained sounds from the Oronoco River Basin - birds singing, mammals communicating, and native people playing nose flutes and chanting. Then Jean read her book aloud and I underscored it with music inspired by and using the magical sounds of the tropical rain forest.

This CD/cassette will soon be available.
